A 'clowder' is the correct term for a group or assembly of cats - as a 'gaggle' is for geese, a 'pride' for lions, a 'hug' for bears and a 'kindle' for kittens. This unusual word distinguishes Bryan Holme's unusual and enchanting album from the very long list of cat books that have preceded it. here are cats with very definite personalities, drawn, painted, sculpted or sewn by international artists of equally strong personality - and some in real life, others on postcards - doing everything from sitting pretty to taking part in a circus act. The underlying idea of the books is, of course, simply to please - visually - the vast army of cat lovers that lie in wait for each attractive new book on their favourite animal. The text that accompanies the wide variety of pictures (many in colour) is a light-hearted history of the cat in life and art. Bryan Holme (Famous throughout publishing as the Director of Studio Books at the Viking Press for many years) is the author and compiler of about 25 illustrated books of his own. Needless to say, he is also a cat lover and has on many occasions been a cat book publisher.
