National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published on September 22, 1888, nine months after the Society was founded. Starting with its January 1905 publication of several full-page pictures of Tibet in 1900-1901, the magazine changed from being a text-oriented publication closer to a scientific journal to featuring extensive pictorial content, and became well known for this style. This issue has articles on The Glass-bottom Boat by Charles Frederick Holder (with 17 illustrations), Explorations in Crete by Edith H. Hall (with 15 illustrations), The Afghan Borderland, Part I: The Russian Frontier by Ellsworth Huntington (with 14 illustrations), With the Monks at Meteora: The Monasteries of Thesssaly by Elizabeth Perkins (illustrated), The Prehistoric Ruin of Tsankawi by George L. Beam (with 12 illustrations), Hidden Perils of the Deep by G. R. Putnam (illustrated with 22 diagrams) [this was taken from the author's book Nautical Charts], and The Wheeler National Monument (illustrated).Charles Frederick Holder (1851-1915) was the inventor of big-game fishing and a founder of Pasadena's Tournament of Roses. A passionate naturalist throughout his life, he was known for his books on marine zoology and the first books on big-game fishing, a sport Holder pioneered in 1898. His books are noted for their combination of accurate scientific detail with exciting narratives.Edith Hall Dohan (Ph.D. 1906) received Bryn Mawr's first doctorate in archaeology and was the second woman to direct an excavation on Crete. Ellsworth Huntington (September 16, 1876 - October 17, 1947) was a professor of geography at Yale University during the early 20th century, known for his studies on environmental determinism/climatic determinism, economic growth and economic geography. He taught at Euphrates College, Turkey (1897-1901); accompanied the Pumpelly (1903) and Barrett (1905-1906) expeditions to central Asia; and wrote of his Asian experiences in Explorations in Turkestan (1905) and The Pulse of Asia (1907). He taught geography at Yale (1907-1915) and from 1917 was a research associate there, devoting his time chiefly to climatic and anthropogeographic studies. George Lytle Beam made photographs professionally for 30 years, and within that body of work, valuable records of historical data are mixed with gems of artistic sensitivity. Beam had a real interest in the ancient Ancestral Puebloan ruins of the Four Corners. He photographed Mesa Verde in Colorado, and his photographs of Tsankawi in New Mexico appeared in the September 1909 issue of National Geographic.G. R.
