The best workaday portrait painters of the Regency period - James Northcote, John Opie, Thomas Phillips, Henry William Pickersgill - favoured a direct, relatively plain, head-and-shoulders portraiture. Their palettes reflect the clothes chosen by their subjects, and tend to be cool, sober, and understated. The revolutionary philosopher, William Godwin, whose Political Justice (1793) set fire to the young minds of half his generation, is painted by Northcote with an almost Roman severity, a classical sage with the light of Reason glowing on (or from) his brow.
