Manohar Publishers & Distributors, 2006. Softcover. New. 15 x 23 cm. Volume 1 : The Protestant Mission in India began in the year 1706 with the arrival of two missionaries in Tranquebar. Out of that two mission enterprises-ecumenical and international by nature ? developed and lasted for more than hundred years; the Danish-Halle Mission in Tranquebar and the English-Halle Mission. These missions greatly influenced protestant Indian Christianity. Volume I depicts the historical background and context of the first Protestant Mission of India. Volume 2 : Focuses on the mission work in South India. It is not only the work of the missionaries that is taken into account, but also the roles of the wives, the Indian co-workers and the Indian members of the congregations are explored. The relations and conflicts between the Lutheran mission and other Christian denominations are investigated. Finally, the relation between the missionaries and Hinduism is addressed. Volume 3 : The cultural exchange between India and Europe took place in the fields of the natural sciences and medicine. The role of language in rural South India was also important for the development of the educational system in India.
