ENVIRONMENTAL PHYSIOLOGY OF PLANTS is intended as a resource for students. It will introduce them to the recent research findings and thinking on the ways in which environmental factors affect fundamental physiological mechanism in plants. This contrasts with the traditional study of 'physiologyical ecology', typically investigated by plant ecologists interested in the autecology of plants. Both ecological and evolutionary ideas are used her to explain basic plysiolgoy at the level of the whole plant, backed by an extensive list of references. --The structure of the book reflects the dual relationship that plants have with their environment: they are sustained by light, water and minerals and subjected to the potentially damaging stresses of temperature, toxins and the effects of other organisms. Accordingly, Chapters 2-4 treat the environment as a fund of resources while Chapters 5-8 examine environmental stress factors. The introductory chapter describes the ecological and evolutionary framework within which plants grow. --While most plants are fundamentally similar in their physiology ad biochemisry, evolution has produced many adaptive inter-specific differences. The ecological significance of this is underlined in the text by the emphatic adoption of a comparative approach. The section on other organizsms as factorss in plant physiology is entirely new, and some other sections, notably those on trasport phenomena in soil, and on anaerobic soils, will not be found elsewhere at this level of treatment. The generous use of line drawings further enhances the value this text.
