They are devoted to five of Rome’s master poets of the late Republican and early Augustan periods. All are exercises in practical criticism. They attempt to describe and evaluate work of importance and maintain its accessibility to readers of both ancient and modern literature. More often than not my subject is a single poem deserving of renewed interest or a fresh reading, but occasionally the method is comparative, ranging poem against poem or author against author. In one instance, the second essay on Propertius, I have focused specifically on the imaginative structure of a complete book of poems, and the final piece touches on certain themes and ideas that serve to unify Virgil’s poetry as a whole. -- I have categorized the essays by genres and by authors who, with one exception, are themselves arranged chronologically. The exception is Virgil, the oldest of the Augustan writers. I have placed him after the writers of lyric and elegy to honor the ancient primacy of epic, and in particular to acknowledge the continued vitality of his monumental accomplishment. Within each authorial cluster I have followed the poems’ numerical order based on manuscript traditions handed down from antiquity. -- The fourth poem of Catullus is my starting point. I presume for it the appearance of autobiography: a boat trip links the coming of spring and the consequent awakening of the poet’s desire to return home (poem 46) with the satisfaction of that yearning upon his arrival at Sir-mio (poem 31). The style is noteworthy for the brisk immediacy of its narration. But since the skiff is also an emblem for life’s leap from birth to senescence, the poem itself is metaphoric for the brilliant tuggings between naivete and sophistication, the spontaneous and the studied, passion and learning, that so enliven Catullus’ poetry. Tension takes a generic turn in poem 11 where lyric verse patterning replaces the iambs usual in invective, and the imagery of Sappho is twisted against her namesake, Lesbia, as complement to her own perversion of the speaker’s fragile inner world.
