Her hands were full, her days lively. When the Colonel went elsewhere, she drove with Miss Melsie. This big city had lovely shops, bands, broad streets. Miss Melsie talked to her a good bit, more as one girl with another than as mistress and maid. Ruth was a good deal taken up with these artless confidences, knowing by this time that Melusine often told things she did not mean to tell. The ancient instincts of a line ofgood servants were waking up in Ruth. Mother had been right enough. This job was " a lot of responsibility." She sat under the window, setting new trimmings to a filmy black blouse. Melusine sat opposite, having dropped in to try it on. " Ruth," she said suddenly, " I wish I knew what we are going to do."
