Two volumes with slipcase box. First hardcover edition, published by Cornell University Press, 1968. The classic ancient medical treatise in which Galen argues that no body part made by Nature could be superfluous, defective, or without purpose. Organized into seventeen 'Books', each focused on a specific region of the body. In each section, Galen seeks to prove the natural consecution of the parts, and the functions each serves. Translated from the Greek, with an Introduction and Commentary by Margaret Tallmadge May. 802 pages total for the two volumes, with Index. 6-3/8" X 9-1/2". Very sturdy brick red colored cloth covered boards. Cover boards are flat, the corners are not bumped or worn. No edge wear to the cover boards. Author and title imprinted on the spine in gold. Lettering on the spine is crisp and not worn or rubbed. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Sewn binding is tight and square for both volumes. This is not a library discard. There are faint age foxing dots to the edges of the text block. Sturdy outer slipcase is intact, very little wear. Slipcase is covered in matching brick red colored cloth as the books.
