The purpose of this book is to study the terrible erosion that hunger causing in the human race and its civilization. an erosion that threatens to blot from the earth all the gigantic works of man. If mankind does not try, urgently and on a world scale. to stop this corrosive action, all the creations of humanity will soon crumble and be buried in the dust of time, and that will happen long before the wind and water have consumed the incalculable potential resources of the soil. The very humanity that is frightened by the remote danger of a world turned desert through exhaustion of its natural resources will witness the arrival of a world depopulated. Dr. de Castro maintains that mass hunger which affects two thirds of the world's population is not the result of overpopulation, as has been claimed by some experts. On the contrary, Dr. de Castro maintains, overpopulation is the result of hunger. Hunger is not the effect of overpopulation, but the cause. This revolutionary scientific concept - that malnutrition is a factor leading to overpopulation - opens up entirely new horizons for world demographic policy. It offers an efficient means of controlling natural population growth - by the use of an adequate diet. Supporting his argument with astonishing and sometimes terrifying facts and figures, Dr. de Castro shows how a billion and a half people now live in a permanent state of hunger, even though the world has at its disposal enough resources to provide an adequate diet for everybody, everywhere. Less dramatic, but not less lethal than the 1829 famines that have swept across China in the last 2000 years, is the hidden hunger which condemns whole populations to die, even though they eat every day. The ravages of hidden hunger arc seen almost everywhere in the world. They range all the way from the tragic indifference to life which is supposedly typical of certain poverty· stricken populations, to rickets, pellagra, beriberi, tuberculosis and other diseases. Hunger, too, has been the most common cause of war and revolution. Famine rides at the head of the Four Horse- men, and War, Pestilence and Death press close behind. This is a book that may well change world thinking on one of mankind's most crucial problems. It is above all a hopeful book for, as Dr. de Castro abundantly demonstrates, we hold the solution to that problem in our own hands., Little, Brown and Company, 1952, 3, UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE-.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy,montage'd colour photographic illustrated dw/dj panels with b/w letters to front, black lettered spine/ backstrip, some minor minimal, superficial scoring/indents but without affecting boards beneath; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present.Top+fore-edges bright and clean without blemish; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - ristine - appears unread, apart from my own collation.Laid in loose,an A4 folded, typewritten Press Release sheet and also a publisher's Review Copy slip for the book's forthcoming release on 29 November,1990.Bright,crisp,unblemished,generally sharp-cornered - rear lower corner only, with a minimal bump - publisher's original dark brown cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/ backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,ix-xpp+1-243pp [paginated] includes acknowledgements,10 sections+Postscript, profuse colour photographs interspersed throughout the text and the book,a note on translation,a bibliography, picture credits and an index; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages and contents list/table. The Press release tells how The Kogi have allowed a film to be made to show us what they know about the balance between mankind, nature and the spiritual world. That film will be shown on BBC2 at peak-viewing time of 9.30pm on Tuesday 4th December,1990.States author available for interview and gives contact name+number for further information. Spectacular gold pieces made by a forgotten civilization, the Taironas, appeared in lage numbers in Colombia in the 1970s.Sixteenth-century chronicles spoke of their ceremonial cities, and eventually tomb robbers led the way to the Lost City of the Taironas in dense mountain jumgle. Alan Ereira went there, and made contact with their communities still functioning high on an isolated mountain. Here an ancient priesthood still rules,in cities more than a thousand years old. They have preserved the culture and philosophy of a culture lost everywhere else: the civilization of the Chibchas, the people of El Dorado. After centuries of deliberate isolation, these people, the Kogi, have decided that the time has come to speak to us.They call themselves The Elder Brothers of the human race, and are convinced that our ignorance and greed will destroy the balance of life on Earth in the next few years. They believe that the only hope is for us to change our ways, and so they have set out to teach us what they know about the balance between mankind, nature and the spiritual world. This book is their warning and their message. It makes sense of much that was not known or understood of the pre-Columbian civilizations of America. And it is a desperate attempt to make us understand the consequences of our own way of living.
