Gordonsville, Virginia, U.S.A.: Farrar Straus & Giroux, 2003. From Booklist Gr. 2-3, younger for reading aloud. The author of two adult books about New Orleans addresses children in this original tall tale about the Big Easy's most famous legendary citizen. Found (like Moses) in a basket on the river--the Mississippi, in this case--Jean quickly weans himself on chicory-laced coffee, and by the age of seven has performed such notable deeds as swimming the river's entire length. Here, he faces his biggest challenge--literally. It seems the Mississippi has been blocked by a huge stray whale. How to unstick this latter-day leviathan? A pinch of cayenne down the blowhole does the trick. The immense, ivory-colored whale towers over houses and local residents in Cook's swirling illustrations, but Jean is portrayed as a skinny, apple-cheeked Every Lad. As the relationship between hero and monster is never adversarial, this serves as a thought-provoking alternative to violent traditional tales, or such modern exemplars as Catherine Wright's Steamboat Annie and the Thousand-Pound Catfish (2001). John Peters Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved Review "Lively paintings match the tone and style of this original tall tale that has plenty of appeal for storytellers and their audiences...The pace is fast, the imagery appropriately homespun, and the colorful illustrations appealing in their agility and comical compositions." -- The Horn Book "With its deadpan good humor, the folksy narrative will draw readers in to set a spell...[Cook's] paintings capture the tale's hyperbole and high spirit in appropriately broad strokes; they deliver the mood of down-home merriment and wisely let the details blur into dabs and streaks of color. A buoyant visit to the bayou of days gone by." -- Publishers Weekly -- Review Review "Lively paintings match the tone and style of this original tall tale that has plenty of appeal for storytellers and their audiences...The pace is fast, the imagery appropriately homespun, and the colorful illustrations appealing in their agility and comical compositions." -- The Horn Book "With its deadpan good humor, the folksy narrative will draw readers in to set a spell...[Cook's] paintings capture the tale's hyperbole and high spirit in appropriately broad strokes; they deliver the mood of down-home merriment and wisely let the details blur into dabs and streaks of color. Tom Wakefield. ?This is the story of a group of people, mostly children over ten, and a much smaller number of men and women, all working and learning together. The children are of many nationalities and all are initially ?disadvantaged' and deprived, coming in nearly every case from poor homes. This mixed community happens to be a school, and its story is the happiest, most encouraging one to be told for a long time. It tells how care, concern, and sympathetic co-operation between adults and children can turn sadness into happiness because, in the end, the great majority of these young people learn to find themselves by communicating with each other ? to live. And the staff, certainly the author, would add that they too are learning to live; in practice by studying their children, each one of whom has some desire or interest or ability that can be discovered and fulfilled. Downsview is what life is all about. There is Rufus who arrived when he was six, stern, withdrawn, uncommunicative, but after two and a half years of encouragement, the moment of triumph comes when he performs his first act of sharing by offering a toy he has made to Tom Wakefield. Herbert, a fourteen-year-old, was aggressive, noisy and well-nigh illiterate. Within weeks he found some sense of security and friendliness. He was soon reading. These are two typical examples of what goes on at Downsview. Mr Wakefield relates his experiences with an immediacy, vigour and humour which come of deep involvement. He takes us through the first tentative and apprehensive beginnings of the school, the solving, for instance, of such basic problems as what form morning assembly should take with so many religions represented, to highly personal accounts of the life of the staff and himself. Each illuminates the results of patient and imaginative attention to individuals, and has lessons for children and adults alike ? parents as well as teachers. The lively narrative has a lot of practical things to say about the bringing up of children at home and at school. In its way it is also quietly revolutionary, implying that a radical review of the educational system should be going on all the time. This is a true story, but its well-drawn characters, the way it sets a scene with a few quick strokes, would be worthy of a talented novelist. The title is based on a mother's statement to Tom Wakefield. An alternative could have been the words of a boy who was enjoying school so much that, at the end of the autumn term, he summed up his attitude by calling, not for three cheers, but 'three boos for the holidays'. Educationalists, social workers and parents will find here a testimony of hope.? Gordonsville, Virginia, U.S.A.: Farrar Straus & Giroux, 2003. From Booklist Gr. 2-3, younger for reading aloud. The author of two adult books about New Orleans addresses children in this original tall tale about the Big Easy's most famous legendary citizen. Found (like Moses) in a basket on the river--the Mississippi, in this case--Jean quickly weans himself on chicory-laced coffee, and by the age of seven has performed such notable deeds as swimming the river's entire length. A pinch of cayenne down the blowhole does the trick.
