Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks provide Available Bit Rate (ABR) and Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) services for data traffic. The network guarantees low cell-loss ratio (CLR) in the ABR service for which it needs to impose a strict traffic policing measures to punish the non-compliant users. The accuracy of a policer is critical for the network to meet the guaranteed QoS. The errors in the policing algorithm lead to poor performance, with a potential QoS short fall. The ABR policer comprises two algorithms, one for conformance checking with reference to a police rate, the other for generating the police rate. The ATM Forum has specified a Dynamic Generic Cell Rate Algorithm (DGCRA) for cell conformance checking with reference to a police rate which is generated by Algorithm A or 2_Store Algorithm B. Algorithm A is accurate but more complex to implement. The 2_Store algorithm is simple but less accurate. The N_Store, an extension of the 2_Store algorithm has been proposed to the ATM Forum [3] as more accurate. My thesis proposes a method to measure the performance of the above ABR policing Algorithms to measure its accuracy which is vital in meeting the guaranteed QoS.
