In this primer for students, scholars, and general readers, she emphasizes the need to enforce human rights standards as a solution to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While much of the book offers engaging, descriptive narrative and stories of real people, drawing on the author’s own experiences taking student groups to Israel and to the occupied Palestinian territory of the West Bank, there is also a wealth of background on relevant politics, history, religion, ethnicity, race relations, and American involvement. The first part of the book begins by describing conditions in the present day, then provides background on basic concepts of human rights, theories of race, and theories of nation. Of special interest is an explanation of the logic of Zionism, showing parallels between Zionism and the Civil Rights movement in America. The second part of the book details the history of the conflict, from the roots of Zionism in the late 19th century through the present. Part 3 surveys the theoretical frameworks that historians, journalists, and activists have used to understand this history, from self-defense through genocide, settler colonialism, and ethnic cleansing.
