XI, (1), 298 pp. ¶ First edition of Husserl's seminal work, which contains his philosophy of logic and mathematics. <br><br>This important work entitled "Formal and Transcendental Logic" with the sub-title "An Attempted Critique of the Logic Reason" provides us with Husserl's final conception of logic. <br><br>Though now famous as the father of phenomenology, Husserl was initially a student of mathematics, and in his two first works "Über den Begriff der Zahl" and "Philosophie der Aritmetik", his early philosophy is developed on the basis of mathematics with the aim to provide a sound foundation for mathematics by combining it with philosophy and psychology. <br><br>His main work from 1900-1901, Logische Untersuchungen", probably one of the two most important and influential philosophical works of the 20th century, Husserl establishes a philosophy that asks the question of the essence of the matter of perception as opposed to the form of perception, as well as the meaning of the difference between formal or pure and material laws, truths and determinations, -all based on his strong interest in the relationship between the formalities of arithmetic and of logic.<br>However, it is in his "Formal and Transcendental Logic" that Husserl most thoroughly introduces us to the formal character of logic and formulates his final conception of it. <br>According to Husserl, logic is formal, because it is nothing more than the development of pure reason, and pure reason is a formal concept. As such, logic for Husserl becomes the self-interpretation of pure reason (die Selbstauslegung der reinen Vernunft) which is, again, a formal activity. Husserl also determines that there are two formal ways of conceiving logic, one being a tool for judging sentences true or false, and another, which includes knowledge.<br><br>And so, this work not only provides us with a genetic-phenomenological investigation of philosophy and of the basis of logic, but it also provides us with an insight into the entire inner systematic structure of late Husserlian thought., FIRST EDITION OF WHAT "MAY BE CONSIDERED THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK OF EVOLUTIONARY THEORY IN THE 20th CENTURY," DOBZHANSKY'S 1937 "SYNTHESIS OF EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY WITH GENETICS", Genetics and the Origin of Species (Ayala, Dobzhansky: National Academy of the Sciences, 1976, p. 166). Dobzhansky's classic inquiry was the first book to discuss genetics as the mechanism for species formation. It played a seminal role in "formulating the modern synthesis of evolutionary theory" and helped to create "the most important single area of scientific inquiry in the twentieth century: biological theory of evolution" (ibid). "The modern theory of evolution would continue to develop in the future, but it was born with Dobzhansky's 1937 book in the same way as the original theory had come about with Darwin's Origin of Species in 1859" (Modern Synthesis: Dobzhansky, Understanding Evolution). In the early 20th c. Ronald Fisher and others set Darwin's theory of natural selection on a new foundation of genetics, leaving an equally important project for those who followed: "to explain in the language of genes, what species are and how they originate. The answer only began to emerge in the 1930s, thanks in large part to the work of a Soviet-born geneticist named Theodosius Dobzhansky" (ibid). "Dobzhansky was interested in discovering the genetics that determined the differences between populations of a species. At the time, most biologists assumed that all of the members of any given species had practically identical genes. But these were assumptions bred in the lab" (ibid). Traveling from Canada to Mexico, Dobzhansky began analyzing the genes of wild fruit flies, Drosophila pseudoobscura. "He found that different populations of Dp did not have identical sets of genes. Each population bore distinctive markers in its chromosomes that distinguished it from other populations. "Dobzhansky helped discover that different fruit fly populations have different frequencies of two different versions of the same chromosome&hellip; if no standard set of genes distinguishes a species, what keeps species distinct from each other? The answer, he correctly realized, was sex. A species is simply a group of animals or plants that reproduces primarily among themselves. Two animals belonging to different species are unlikely to mate, and even if they do, they will rarely produce viable hybrids. Dobzhansky ran experiments on fruit flies that demonstrated that this incompatibility is caused by specific genes carried by one species that clash with the genes from another species" (ibid). The depth of Dobzhansky's research allowed him to gather "the empirical evidence that supported and made acceptable the mathematico-theoretical framework that allowed the integration of Mendelian genetics with Darwin's theory of evolution&hellip; [First he] extended the integration of Mendelism and Darwinism much beyond the range provided by the mathematical models and produced a comprehensive evolutionary theory that carried population genetics up to the process of speciation and beyond. The single-most important empirical fact established and argued by Dobzhansky is the ubiquity of genetic variation. He was quick to see the momentous implications of this fact for mankind. Dobzhansky set forth that the individual is not the embodiment of some ideal type or norm, but rather a unique and unrepeatable realization in the field of quasi-infinite possible genetic combinations. The pervasiveness of genetic variation provides the biological basis of human individuality. Dobzhansky evinced that it also leads to demystification of the much abused concept of race" (ibid).
