Paperback / softback. New. Until the end of the eighteenth century, missionaries to the New World agreed that diabolism lay at the heart of the Native American belief system and at the root of their own failure to establish a church purged of Satan and pagan superstition. The Devil mattered, and he occupied a central place in discussions of all non-Christian religious systems and in the bitter disputes over how to combat them. In this elegant and sensitive analysis, Fernando Cervantes gives the Devil his due, illuminating a neglected aspect of the European encounter with America and setting the full history of the "spiritual conquest" in a rich and original context. He reveals how Native Americans reinterpreted the view of Christianity presented to them, how they refused to see the world as the missionaries saw it. Drawing on archival sources, he brings into clear focus the complex, often bewildering, and sometimes tragic clash between a theology that posited the existence of competing forces and one that insisted that all deities were multiform beings within which good and evil coexisted. He deals in compelling and persuasive detail with the social history of the interaction between the two cultures, explaining not only the impact of European ideas upon the New World but the influence of diabolism on the ideology of the Old. And he provides a subtle account of the role of diabolism in the emerging baroque culture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that strikingly challenges conventional explanations of the growth of skepticism in the period., 6, NY: Round Table Press, 1935. hardcover in dust jacket., minor evidence of age, no real flaws, great copy.; $2.50 price intact on flap., dj says book, "a religious book club selection". 1935 is printed on title page and on copyright page, no edition statement.; 288pp., iv appendices, bibliography and index.; scholarly, well researched assessment of the conflict between the nazi regime and the german protestant church as it stood going into 1935. background is presented for both entities as they emerged from the post-war years and the weimar republic.; scarce title.. "Though engineers, architects and even landscape designers had staked out fields of operation for themselves in the seventeenth century such professions were in flux well into the eighteenth century. The same man might still operate in all of these fields. But by the middle of the century professional boundaries were becoming clearer. Jean Rondelet took up his career in 1770, working for Jacques-Germain Soufflot, architect of the most conspicuous and structurally daring church of the period, Sainte-Genevieve, now known as the Pantheon, in Paris. Rondelet assumed the role of technical expert, taking on more and more control not only of the structural design but of the site organisation as well. And he was to dedicate his life to these tasks. For the church became a focus of structural debate that became increasingly partisan and acrimonious when faults in the structure threatened a total collapse of the dome. Architects and engineers found distinct voices for themselves in the ensuing uproar. Rondelet emerged, not quite the victor, but the man commissioned to ensure structural stability." "This book, the first devoted to Rondelet, tells the story of the most celebrated architectural debate of the century. It also examines Rondetlet's career in full, his publications and his long lasting influence on the training of architects and the administration of architectural practice in France. More than any other architect Rondelet represents the era of change during which the foundations for modern architectural theory and practice were laid."--Jacket., Yale University Press, 2007, 3, Paperback / softback. New.
In Blood and Boundaries, Stuart B. Schwartz takes us to late medieval Latin America to show how Spain and Portugalâs policies of exclusion and discrimination based on religious origins and genealogy were transferred to their colonies in Latin America. Rather than concentrating on the three principal divisions of colonial societyâIndians, Europeans, and people of African originsâas is common in studies of these colonial societies, Schwartz examines the three minority groups of moriscos, conversos, and mestizos. Muslim and Jewish converts and their descendants, he shows, posed a special problem for colonial society: they were feared and distrusted as peoples considered ethnically distinct, but at the same time their conversion to Christianity seemed to violate stable social categories and identities. This led to the creation of âcleanliness of bloodâ regulations that explicitly discriminated against converts. Eventually, Schwartz shows, those regulations were extended to control the subject indigenous and enslaved African populations, and over time, applied to the growing numbers of mestizos, peoples of mixed ethnic origins. Despite the efforts of civil and church and state institutions to regulate, denigrate, and exclude, members of these affected groups often found legal and practical means to ignore, circumvent, or challenge the efforts to categorize and exclude them, creating in the process the dynamic societies of Latin America that emerged in the nineteenth century.
, 6, New. The Swiss theologian Adolf Keller was the leading ecumenist on the European continent between the two world wars. In this book the historian Marianne Jehle-Wildberger delineates his life and its achievements. Based on research in forty archives in Europe and the United States, a picture emerges that shows a wonderful man who was a personal friend of Karl Barth, C. G.Jung, Thomas Mann, and Albert Schweitzer - and thus who was influenced by the spiritual tendencies of the twentieth century. Keller cooperated closely with the National Council of Churches. His Central Bureau of Relief in Geneva (Inter-Church Aid) was supported by American churches. His lectures at Princeton Theological Seminary on "Religion and Revolution" (1933) - in which he was one of the first commentators to denounce National Socialism in Germany - set a new standard of political discussion and are unsurpassed. Marianne Jehle-Wildbergers's book is an important contribution to twentieth-century church history and to the history of the twentieth century in general., 6, Istanbul: Eren Yayincilik, 2014.
"The eight articles and book chapters included in this volume were written in the course of several decades during which I worked, be it as graduate student, research assistant or professor of history, at the universities of Frankfurt am Main, Gießen, Berlin (Freie Universität) and Bochum. They address questions and issues related to the social, economic and political history of the Balkans under Ottoman rule in general and how they were answered or discussed in the framework of national historiographies in particular. Although some of the arguments propounded in these texts may seem today rather outdated or of little relevance to current discourses, there are others that might be considered as still valid. At any rate, I have been persuaded to publish these texts, not least in order to make them easily accessible to students in the field". Contents: Preface and Acknowledgements. Contents.
