Published in seven folio volumes between 1840 and 1848, it contains more than 700 hand-coloured plates, largely the work if Gould and his wife Elizabeth. For many years the plates in 'Gould' have represented the standard of excellence in ornithological illustration. The editors have selected ninety-six of Gould's finest plates to illustrate the more common Australian birds if interest. Accompying each colour plate us a brief quotation from Gould's own handbook and detail if the distribution, food and nest of the burd, prepared by the editors. In addition, Mr Chisholm has written a substantial introduction dealing with Gould' life and his work on the birds and animals if Australia. For the first time in more than hundred years, a part of this great work us now brought within the reach of the general reader.
