In 1901 vestigden scheepsbouwer Berend Niestern zich met zijn zonen in de noordelijke haven van Delfzijl en startten een scheepswerf waar ijzeren schepen werden gebouwd. Twintig jaar later begonnen de broers Gerhardus en Jacob Sander ook met de scheepsbouw in Delfzijl. Beide werven, oorspronkelijk gelegen aan of bij een sluis - een "zijl" - in de zeedijk / dijk en langs de voormalige rivier "Delf", maakten een snelle progressie die leidde tot verhuizingen binnen de gemeentegrenzen. Na de oorlog was er ook een werf in Wirdum die begon met het bouwen van achtbanen. Tien jaar later werd deze scheepswerf "Apol", later "Shipyard Appingedam" genoemd, op grotere schaal voortgezet. Deze werf en de Niestern-werf fuseerden in 1970 en noemden zichzelf Appingedam Niestern Delfzijl. Weer tien jaar later volgde de fusie met de Sander-werf en werden de gezamenlijke werven Niestern Sander BV genoemd. Niestern, Sander en Appingedam hebben allemaal hun eigen specialisaties meegenomen in de fusie. Dit leidde tot een krachtig, modern bedrijf met nieuwbouw- en reparatieafdelingen, waaronder een machinefabriek en een interne timmerafdeling. In mei 2001 bestond het scheepsbouw- en reparatiebedrijf 100 jaar. In deze eeuw hadden de voormalige onafhankelijke werven een aantal overtuigende geschiedenis geschreven. Niestern tekende voor de engineering en bouw van de eerste zelfoprichtende motorreddingboot ter wereld en voor het patent op de gereduceerde / verlaagde dubbele bodem voor onderzetters, Sander genoot wijdverspreide bekendheid als een zeer innovatief bedrijf, terwijl Appingedam zijn naam vestigde met de bouw van zeer specifieke schepen en de introductie van nieuwe productiemethoden. De waardering en het respect voor het werk dat vele generaties scheepsbouwers onder supervisie van het management in Delfzijl, Farmsum, Wirdum en Appingedam hadden gedaan, werd in mei 2001 beloond met het toekennen van een Koninklijke titel. Twenty years later the brothers Gerhardus and Jacob Sander also began shipbuilding activities in Delfzijl. Both yards, originally located on or near a lock - a “zijl” - in the sea wall/dike and along the former river “Delf”, made a rapid progression that led to relocations within the municipal borders. After the war there was also a yard in Wirdum that started building coasters. Ten years later this shipyard “Apol” later called “Shipyard Appingedam” continued on a larger scale. This yard and the Niestern yard merged in 1970 and named themselves Appingedam Niestern Delfzijl. Again ten years later the merger with Sander yard followed and the joint yards were named Niestern Sander BV. Niestern, Sander and Appingedam all brought their own specializations with them into the merger. This led to a powerful modern company with newbuilding and repair departments including a machine factory and an in-house carpentry department. In May 2001 the shipbuilding and repair company existed 100 years. In this century the former independent yards had written some convincing history. Niestern signed for the engineering and building of the first self-uprighting motor lifeboat in the world and for the patent of the reduced/lowered double bottom for coasters, Sander enjoyed widespread fame as a highly innovative company, while Appingedam established its name with the construction of very specific ships and the introduction of new production methods.
