Glaeser, formerly resident engineer of construction for the Alaskan Engineering Commission employed on the construction of the first Alaskan coal washery built by the Government, is assistant mine foreman of the Burnett mine, Pacific Coast Coal Co. of Seattle. Holman I. Pearl, E. R. Cullity and A. K. Knickerbocker have joined company in the corporation of Allied Engineers, Ltd. They have reopened the office and assay laboratories at Le Pas, Manitoba, and will maintain an office of the company in the Yegen building at Butte, Mont. Henry M. Adkinson made a short address on the Service of the Mine Promoter--the real promoter, not the unprincipled one--at a get-together dinner held under the auspices of the Salt Lake stock and mining exchange and the mining committee of the commercial club of Salt Lake City, on April 29. Robert K. Painter, who has been with the General Chemical Co. for eleven years, recently as assistant general manager, has joined with A. V. Schenck and J. D. Stewart to establish a consulting engineering firm at Auburn, Cal. The firm will give particular attention to mine management and development. John C. Branner JOHN CASPER BRANNER, president emeritus of Stanford University, died on March 1. He had been a member of the Institute since 1884, and contributed various papers and discussions to its TransActions. The most recent one, on Oil Possibilities in Brazil, presented at the February meeting, was published after his death. Dr. John Maxson Stillman, in the Stanford Illustrated Reniew, published a biography and appreciation of Doctor Branner from which the following paragraphs are taken: Doctor Branner was born in New Market, Tenn. , on July 4, 1850. Upon the death of his father, he assumed editorial control of the Advocate, a daily and weekly newspaper published at Palestine, and in the hot campaign of 1896 fought through its columns and upon the hustings, (wherever the enemy was to be met) the battles of Democracy in gallant and effective style and, as the nominee of his party for Representative in the Twentyfifth Legislature from the Twenty-ninth district, helped lead the way to victory at the polls. He is a member of the following committees: Judiciary No. 2 Privileges and Elections, Public Printing, County Government and County Finances. He was married to Miss Jettie Jones, daughter of Judge Theo. T. Jones, at Palestine December 19, 1894. Mr. Ewing is a member of the I. O. O. F. and K. of P. fraternities. He is of Scotch-Irish descent. His father was a native of Tennessee, and died at Palestine, Texas, in June, 1896. His mother Mrs. Elza J. Ewing, was born in Oxford, Miss. , was a daughter of W. G. Rogen, (deceased) first Sheriff of Anderson county, Texas, and is now living at Palestine. Col. J. W. Ewing came to Texas from Memphis, Tenn. , in 1844; with Matt Dale, who subsequently fell at Shilob, founded the Palestine Advocate in 1851; enlisted in the Confederate army as a private soldier and came out at the close of the war with a Second Lieutenants commission and returned to his home to find the accumulations of a life-time swept away. As a newspaper manager and editorial writer he had few equals, was an indomitable defender of right, and is affectionately remembered by thousands of people in Texas.
