Gene Fant writes in the preface: ""Most of us have heard that Christ is 'the Author and Finisher of our faith' (Hebrews 12:2), so it makes sense that the Gospel would be God's story. As many a church message board has noted so succinctly, 'History is His Story.' In our easy discussions of special revelation, I cannot help but wonder if we have missed something awe-inspiring that may be revealed by a reversal of the lens that we turn toward narrative. Perhaps the Gospel is not just like a story; perhaps story, narrative in general, is like the Gospel. My clear conviction is that something stands behind the power of narrative. In fact, I believe that Someone stands behind it. There is an Author whose skill and grace imbues the broad range of the stories that we tell. There is a Father who gave us a story to help us understand our place in this world, a story that points back to Him. His story is, in many ways, the only story that we know. When we use that realization as a foundation for interpreting and generating narrative, it changes everything, including ourselves."", B&H Academic, 2010, 2.5, London: The Technical Press. CONTENT: Welcome to the fascinating story of how we got the world's greatest book -- the Bible. It is a captivating story that includes a little bit of everything: adventure and violence, mystery and bravery, and dumb luck or divine intervention -- depending on your point of view. How in the world did we get this book that some people swear by and other people swear at? You don't have to be a skeptic to have a grocery list of questions about the formation of the Bible, such as: Who wrote these documents and when?; How were these ancient writings transmitted through the ages?; As scribes made copies of copies, didn't they make mistakes that caused the ancient writings to be changed and corrupted?; How was it decided which writings would be included in the Bible?; What are the Dead Sea Scrolls, and why are archaeological finds like these such a big deal? Original texts were captured and passed down from generation to generation by elders and leaders, many inked by hand in extreme conditions. Christians and Jews canonized the Christian, Catholic, and Hebrew Bibles over a period of thousands of years. Devoted people dedicated their lives throughout time to put this unique book into the hands of people worldwide. After that time though, the covers were greatly transformed -- they came alive with outstanding works from various artists. This is Volume 7B in the Anchor Bible series of book by book translations of the Bible. The publisher's blurb declares ''The Anchor Bible marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation among scholars in biblical research; each volume is the work of an outstanding Protestant, Catholic or Jewish authority on the Bible, and the entire project is under the general editorship of William Foxwell Albright, Professor Emeritus of Semitic Languages at Johns Hopkins University, and David Noel Freedman, Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament Literature at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. The aim is to make the Old and New Testaments accessible to the modern reader; its methods are to arrive at the meaning of the Bible through exact translation and extended exposition, and to reconstruct, as much as possible, the ancient settings of the biblical story.'' "The Dead Sea Scrolls (also the Qumran Caves Scrolls) are ancient Jewish and Hebrew religious manuscripts discovered between 1946 and 1956 at the Qumran Caves in what was then Mandatory Palestine, near Ein Feshkha in the West Bank, on the northern shore of the Dead Sea. Dating from the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century CE, the Dead Sea Scrolls are considered to be a keystone in the history of archaeology with great historical, religious, and linguistic significance because they include the oldest surviving manuscripts of entire books later included in the biblical canons, along with deuterocanonical and extra-biblical manuscripts which preserve evidence of the diversity of religious thought in late Second Temple Judaism. At the same time they cast new light on the emergence of Christianity and of Rabbinic Judaism. Most of the scrolls are held by Israel in the Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum, but their ownership is disputed by Jordan due to the Qumran Caves' history: following the End of the British Mandate for Palestine in 1947, Jordan occupied the area in the 1948 ArabIsraeli War, and Israel captured both the area and several Scrolls from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War. However, some of the scrolls are still in Jordan and are now displayed at The Jordan Museum in Amman. Ownership of the scrolls is also contested by the State of Palestine.
