Full contemporary blue gilt pebbled morocco shelfback and cloth boards, marbled endpapers. Some slight uneven discoloration to upper cover, otherwise a very good, sound copy. " ... important chapters in the history of American sport" Révoil lived in the United States between 1842 and 1851, where he hunted and fished in all parts of the country, keeping rigorous notebooks and recording his observations with an acute eye for scenery and detail. He wrote several works, including "Chasses et pêches de l'autre monde" (Paris, 1856), from which the 1861 edition was revised under this title. Neither of the two earlier editions, however, appears to have contained the fantastic and often haunting engravings by YAN DARGENT (Bretagne, 1824 - 1899) which animate this edition. A translation of this title and "Pêches dans l'Amérique du Nord" later appeared as "Shooting and fishing in the rivers, prairies, and backwoods of North America" (L., Tinsley brothers, 1865). Of this interesting sportsman, Clark observes "His many accounts are important chapters in the history of American sport." Somewhat surprising for its time, a not altogether xenophobic account of the wave of Chinese immigrants at this time settling the West Coast of the United States, with sympathetic chapters on social and economic conditions in Qing Dynasty China; Chinese immigrants as laborers on the Pacific Railroad and in the California gold regions, as well as some typically unsavory passages on the Chinese "character" (clannish and prejudicial) and Chinese "passtimes" (portrayed as principally gambling and opium-smoking). Includes a detailed description of an American joss-house. Author Russell Conwell (1843-1925), a liberal clergyman, lawyer and newspaperman, served as an immigration agent for the state of Minnesota after the Civil War, an experience which presumably provided the background for the current work (see DAB).
