Interesting allocation of attention; German philosophy (Kant, Fichte, Schelling Hegel, Schleiermacher, Schopenhauer) gets 36 pages while Herbert Spencer gets 84 and George Henry Lewes gets 67. Charles Peirce’s assessment: “Six pages would have been ample to set forth the doctrine here diluted to six hundred.Motion is the only existent; time and space merely its phases. God is the universal principle of motion. In place of arguing these propositions, the author tags them incongruously to sketches of the history of philosophy—sketches nil as arguments, and as history rambling, feeble and ill-proportioned. rambling. The top and bottom edges of the spine strips are frayed; its sides by the joints are faded from shelf wear rubbing. Most of the boards' corners are threadbare, up to 1/4 in. The front board has a 1/4 in. threadbare spot and a 1/4 in. faded spot. The text block ends have darkened. The endpapers are split over the hinges; the front pastedown is chipped along the top edge.
