Inscribed and signed to the title page in blue ink NOT by the author Craig Ryan, but by ""John Paul Stapp, the Unholy Ghost of Muroc." Muroc, a settlement on Rogers Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert in South Central California, was named for early settlers Ralph and Clifford Corum -- their surname spelled backwards. A post office operated there from 1910 to 1951. It's now the location of Edwards Air Force Base. Stapp (1910-1999), career Air Force officer, flight surgeon, physician, biophysicist, and pioneer in studying the effects of acceleration and deceleration forces on humans, was a colleague and contemporary of Chuck Yeager. He merits 47 references in the index of this book. Also laid in is an autograph signed letter from Stapp, reporting "Here is the book! Warner Brothers bought Craig Ryan's rights, and will turn our an epic in 18 months from start. . . ." Given stronger seats and proper web harnesses, Stapp believed the tolerance of humans to acceleration and decleration forces (as in plane crashes) was much greater than thought possible. He was himself the most frequent volunteer in rocket sleds on dry lake beds in the Southwest where his theories were tested, twice breaking his wrist. In his 29th and last ride at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, Stapp demonstrated that a human can withstand at least 46.2 g (facing forward, with adequate harnessing). This is the highest known acceleration voluntarily encountered by a human, set on December 10, 1954, on which date Stapp reached a speed of 632 mph (1,017 km/h), breaking the land speed record, at which point he was declared "the fastest man on earth." Many lives have doubtless beens saved since Col. Stapp insisted on the adoption of stronger aircraft seats, recommended rear-facing seats in military transports (they're safer in crashes), and replaced simple lap belts with modern web harnesses. 328 pp. including index., Books<
