[ED: Hardcover/gebunden], [PU: Brill NV], with dust jacket PREFACE The present volume is intended as a contribution to continuing research regarding Jesus, especially as it concerns the historical and social contextualization of Jesus and his movement. Every student who begins exegetical study will often hear (or at least should hear) of the importance of context for understanding the meaning of a given passage of Scripture. We hope here, among other things, to serve a pedagogical function, in insisting upon that principal in the study of Jesus. The volume is organized around topics that speak to the concern of context. The studies devoted to theory justify the placement of Jesus fully in a Jewish environment where consciousness of the importance of purity was axiomatic. The difficulties of reconstructing this environment are recognized and addressed. The "background" studies treat those topics that the authors believe are fundamental to an appreciation of Jesus in• that setting. The exegetical studies offer analysis of passages judged to be especially important for ascertaining the focus and thrust of Jesus' ministry. The degree to which our objectives bave been fulfilled is an assessment we leave to the judgment of our colleagues and critics. The authors are grateful to the editors of Arbeiten zur Geschichte des antiken Judentums und des Urchristentums, especially Professor Martin Hengel, who has shown much interest in our work, and Dr. David E. Orton for accepting this collection of studies for publication.
