PUTTING THE VIEWER WHERE THE ACTION ISHow can watching the Olympic Games or the Tour de France on TV be as exciting as being there? How can one zoom into the action to follow an athlete, or zoom out for the action highlights, or pan across to follow the crowds reaction, or even participate in a live discussion? With LIVE you can. LIVE introduces a multi-channel TV format that adapts in real-time to viewer feedback. This dynamic format is made possible by a set of production tools that enable contextual search and recommendation of multimedia content across multiple sources in close to real-time.The LIVE format was tested by the Austrian broadcaster ORF during the XXIX Olympic Games in Beijing 2008. Over a period of 6 days ORF broadcasted 138 hours of the LIVE TV format to 500 Austrian households. The viewers were not only satisfi ed with the experience they wanted more interactive programmes available. Viewers would like to see other major sports events (e.g. various world championships or the Formula One), news, cultural and election coverage and even the daily television programmes to be covered in a similar way. Now it is up to the pioneering television broadcasters to integrate the concepts and systems developed in LIVE into their future television programmes.
